MAKE IT YOUR EXPERIENCE

On the day of the session, we’ll start off in the studio for your hair and makeup with our professional artist. Make sure to eat first, but we always have snacks at the studio to help you keep your energy up! Hair and makeup typically lasts about 60 minutes, then our session will last up to 1.5 hours, so plan accordingly!  We’ll start in the studio for some modern and fun indoor images, then we head out to the pre-planned locations based on your senior’s interests and personality where they have a true model experience. Our seniors often love to make plans with friends for after their session… after all, your hair and makeup is done, and you should definitely show it off!

THIS DAY IS ALL ABOUT YOU,
YOUR ONLY A SENIOR ONCE!

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

Part of the planning process for your session includes choosing a great location. Your senior session is a pretty big deal and we like to encourage you to brainstorm and plan every last detail with us, including where we shoot.Your senior portrait session revolves around you and how you dream of being photographed. Do you find yourself flipping through the latest Allure or Glamour, wishing that was you in their editorial spread? An urban alleyway or cityscape might be the perfect location for your session. Were you so involved in sports during your high school years that you couldn’t imagine a session without incorporating your home turf somehow? Let’s head to your school (with administrative permission, of course) and set up on the field or on the court. Are you the free spirit, boho type who loves writing poetry and listening to indie artists? A session on the beach or in a field may be your ideal location. The location that we agree upon will set the general mood for your session. It is important to keep in mind the overall atmosphere and feel of each place that you brainstorm. As we plan the session together, we can discuss the pros and cons of each and how it will affect the mood of your portraits. There are so many possibilities when it comes to choosing a great location, we just need to narrow it down to the perfect one for you and your unique style and personality.

WHAT TO WEAR

One of the most important things you can do for your senior session is secure a great wardrobe. It can mean the difference between a good portrait of you and an amazing portrait of you. A great wardrobe can be interpreted in many different ways, but what they all have in common is that they leave you feeling confident, which will show through in your pictures. So, where do you even start when planning your wardrobe?  Well, your senior portraits should reflect who you are, right here, right now. This is a pivotal point in your life as you transition from childhood to adulthood. So, each piece of your wardrobe should help to tell the story of who you are. I like to have my seniors put together at least three completely different outfits. One outfit that they feel extremely comfortable in and would be seen in most days at school (more on the casual side), another outfit that would be considered appropriate for current trends(can be more dressy or “outside the box”), and a final outfit that would be considered classic or timeless. We all have different sides that we show the world at different times. Your senior session can represent you as a whole person, not just one side of you. Finding inspiration for wardrobe ideas can be as simple as flipping through your favorite magazine, browsing your favorite store’s website, or paying attention to the wardrobe from your favorite TV shows. Where you shop doesn’t matter as much as where you are gathering your inspiration. Think about head to toe styling. Add hats, hair accessories, jewelry, scarves, or whatever else completes your outfit. The most important thing to remember is that you should feel comfortable and happy with your wardrobe selections.

GIVE IT YOUR PROPS

Although our style of photography is less prop based, and more YOU based, bringing in props that really mean something to you can add a sentimental factor to your portraits. Consider bringing in your band instrument, your letterman’s jacket, pom poms, a football, a stack of your favorite novels, your dog.  Anything you can think of to help tell the story of you, as you are right now.

GIRLS

  1. Get your hair done and any other pampering done 5-7 days before your session.
  2. Make sure that your nails are clean and filed. Clear polish is fine, as is colored polish. Try to steer clear of anything too bright or too trendy though. Remember, the focus is on you overall, not your nails.
  3. Shoes should be scuff-free and have clean soles.
  4. Try everything on. Have someone take a picture of you with their phone (or do a selfie in the mirror) to see how your outfit will photograph in general. A flowing top or dress will sometimes photograph differently than it looks in person, while a more tailored and fitted look will show your shape.)
  5. Consider dressing in layers.

BOYS

  1. Get your hair cut about 5-7 days before the session.
  2.  Make sure your nails are clean and trimmed.
  3. Ask for help if you need it when choosing your wardrobe. Your mom, sister, girlfriend, aunt, or any important lady in your life, will all have some good insight as to what looks good on you.
  4. Make sure that the bottoms of your shoes are clean and the tops are free of scuffs and dirt.

BOTH

  1. Please do not get sunburned in the weeks leading up to your session. Lobster red skin, tan lines, or peeling skin (that’s the worst) is not photo friendly.
  2. Stay hydrated in the week leading up to your session, and on the day of your session. It works wonders for your skin, leaving you glowing and looking healthy.
  3. Get a great night’s sleep the night before your session. It will help not only how you look, but how you feel.
  4. If you’re due for a cleaning at the dentist, a week before your session is a great time to book. Your teeth will be clean, white, and looking great! If you aren’t due for a cleaning, consider doing an at home teeth whitening treatment. You won’t regret it.
  5. Make sure your nails are clean and trimmed or filed.
  6. Don’t forget to shave (boys AND girls!).

WHAT'S YOUR GOAL

If you already have in mind how you will be using the images from the session, please let me know before we start. Whether you are looking to make an album, or have wall art made, I can plan our session accordingly with certain poses and shots.

If you are unsure how you will be using them, that’s okay, too! Communication between us is vital to making sure that the end product is exactly what you have been dreaming of.

ALBUMS: Our heirloom quality albums are a must for every senior. These beautiful albums will be passed down through generations. When she’s away at college and you’re missing her, you will carefully look through every photo that captured her personality so well and you’ll smile. When her daughter is asking her about her high school years, they’ll look through the album together and share stories. When her great-granddaughter wants to know who she resembles most, she’ll be able to flip through the pages of this legacy piece to see what your senior looked like as a teenager. Albums are the best way to have all of your favorite images to cherish forever.

WALL ART: From canvas to metal to acrylic, we’ll help you choose the medium that will best display your favorite images for all of your guests to see. We can help you assemble a collection for your wall that will be a beautiful centerpiece for your room. We can even show you what your wall art will look like on your own wall as we assist you with your order.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: You’ll want to share the good news of your graduating senior with friends and family too, so let us take care of this part for you! We’ll choose your favorite images at your ordering session and design a card that you love!

LET'S TELL YOUR STORY

We are always humbled by each and every client that chooses us to help tell the story of their life with photography. It is true that a photograph remembers everything. The emotions and the nuances of the moment that it captured, forever.

Things that our busy minds often forget as time goes on. Photography should be a reflection of all of the little details that make up your existence. Tell me, what kinds of feelings arise when you find a picture of your family in dress clothes (clothes that you never wore except for church and the family portrait) in front of a drab background? Now, what kinds of feelings arise when you find a picture of your family casually laughing, playing, and having fun at the park? Perhaps a little bit more sentimental emotion as you recall such a happy moment in your life. A real moment in your life.

Our style of photography is symbolic of the emotion found in the second example. We want to capture your story with truth and emotion and make your story come alive, complete with all of the emotions and details as they really happened. From maternity and boudoir sessions, to high school senior and family photography, we are honored to have a place in the story of your life.

“Photography is a way of feeling, of touching, of loving. What you have caught on film is captured forever…it remembers little things long after you have forgotten everything.”-Aaron Siskund, 1903-1991, American photographer
